mysinglefriend.com dating site review

MySingleFriend Review

Overview

MySingleFriend wants you to fall in love with love again. The premise is simple -- your friends can take control of your dating profile and sign you up on your behalf.

It was set up in 2004 by presenter Sarah Beeney and her husband, and promises a ‘no-nonsense’ approach to dating. After all, no-one knows you better than your friends!

MySingleFriend.com member structure

As it’s a UK-based site, members are mostly Brits. Profiles are written by their friends, so the membership base is a bit of a collaborative effort.

  • Members: There are 200,000+ users in the UK.
  • Gender proportion: 38% Male and 62% Female

How does MySingleFriend.com work?

MySingleFriend is safe, secure and anonymous. It’s very easy to use, too. Once you’ve chosen a username and password and asked a friend to write something about you, you can search the site and view other people’s profiles.

If you like someone, you can drop them a message, or you can wait for others to message you. Eventually, you’ll hopefully both feel brave enough to share your real contact and details and meet up.

Sign up process

Sign up should be easy, as your friend will be the one filling out your details. However, it’s a fairly relaxed process where you answer questions about your appearance and preferences, which you do using drop-down menus. You then add a profile picture and you’re pretty much done. It only takes around 10 minutes in total.

Ease of use

The site is modern, sleek and very easy to use. All features are clear to see on the page too, so it’s great for busy people who don’t have much time to browse.

Chat, messages and notifications

Anyone can read messages straight away, even after they’ve just signed up. However, you’ve guessed it -- only upgraded members can actually respond with your own unique message.

Free members can use a pre-set message to let someone know they’re interested. Messages get sent straight to the person’s email address, but all details including your name are kept anonymous. Instead, only your username is shown.

Profile quality

Compared to other dating websites, profiles on MySingleFriend are full of detail, and this is thanks to the fact that your friend will be filling out your profile information.

They will obviously want success for you, so they usually do a great job. Profiles have very clear photos too, so you can see who’s behind the profile.

MySingleFriend mobile app

The MySingleFriend app is free to download on iOS devices. It comes with some great additional features including Veto, which is where your friend can send you recommendations of people you might like to date who aren’t within your usual ‘type’.

You can then veto this, or you can go ahead and contact the recommended person.

All desktop features are also available on the app, but you have to pay separately for an app subscription to make the most of it.

If you’re likely to be on your phone more than desktop, we recommend signing up to this instead.

Real life reviews for MySingleFriend.com

You have to make an effort on any dating website! I was on and off this site for a couple of years and dated several really nice guys! I finally met my husband and we’ve been happily married for 2 years now!

He was in Nottingham and I was in London so we were forced to email and text for a couple of months but there was a real spark there and the banter was just easy!

When we finally met it was like we’d known each other forever! Don’t let these negative reviews put you off!

Have a go for a month….then go away and come back and try for another month! You’ve got to be ready to make the effort and just say yes!! It’s so worth it!!”

Pros and Cons

Pros of MySingleFriend

  • Profile information is very detailed, and usually the description your friend writes for you can spark up a good conversation.
  • There are loads of great features to use.
  • It’s fun -- especially if you get your friends fully involved!

X Cons of MySingleFriend

  • There is a little less choice than you might perhaps like. This is because there are still a relatively small amount of people using the site.
  • MySingleFriend doesn’t send you matches -- you have to find them yourself.
  • The app needs a separate membership to the site.

My recommendation

Overall, MySingleFriend is a lot of fun, and roping your friends into helping create a profile can make the world of online dating seem a lot less daunting.

However, you’ll need to be careful that you make sure you clarify whether you’re talking to the person behind the profile or their friend, as you may find the user has given their friend complete control.

It’s not exactly without its downsides. There is still a fairly small membership base so finding matches can be tricky in some towns and cities, and it’s a shame that the app and desktop site run on two different memberships. You might want to decide on which one you’re going to use and just sign up for one of them.

But it is fun with loads of great features, so if you want a helping hand then MySingleFriend might be the one for you. 3.6/5.
